Tara at the conference

Thursday June 14, 2012
1st classroom

Good evening and hope you had a beautiful day.  For us here we had another great day.  We met for breakfast and to plan for the day ahead.  After arriving at the school, we all went into our groups and began having fun with the children.  Our group, Tara, Hanah, Charlene, Richard and myself, went and made bracelets with the 7th grade class. This class did not make the bracelets  on Tuesday and they were asking why and the reason was, that we ran out of time, but thank God we were able to make them today. While making the bracelets we were teaching them a bible verse, which many of them knew We just spent quality time with them.  The other groups were with their classes and just having fun. Then the painting started.  Two classes were moved to other classrooms and we just began to move desks and to paint the walls.  It seemed like everyone had either a paintbrush in their hands or a paint-roller, even Angel our bus driver got involved as well as a teacher.  The love just spreads and everyone wants to be a part of something special.  God is Great. We were able to put on 1 coat of paint in the 2 classrooms before lunch.  We came back to the learning center, got a quick bite to eat and then  Christina and the ladies went to a Women Conference.  The men went back to the school and put on another coat of paint.  The chalk boards were mounted by Richard and Webster who had hired a man with the drills needed for concrete walls.  What a difference painting and lighting makes, it seems that they got 2 new rooms in the building. I am sure the new chalk boards will be a hit with the teachers.  I cannot wait to see their faces tomorrow morning when the get in to school and see that the classrooms were made over, I'm sure the children will enjoy it as well.  The work will continue, we have 3 classrooms left and we pray that we have enough time to finish painting them and mounting the chalk boards that are badly needed.  We got back to the learning center ate and got much needed rest.  The time spent at the school is emotionally draining as well as physically, but God will supply us with all the strength needed to continue the task at hand.  I pray for all the children and for us all.   Good night and enjoy the pictures on facebook.

Wednesday June 13, 2012
Good evening, coming to you from Lusaka, Zambia.  Today we had a great day.  Our day started out with a quick breakfast and a short commute to the school.  The children were excited to see us coming, the ones on recess were running towards us when they saw the bus coming.  After all the hellos, which can take awhile, we got to teaching and praising the Lord with all the students.  Rachel, Cindy and Rhiannon were working with the 3rd graders, they were teaching them some hymns in english and in turn the children were teaching us some songs in their language. They also were able to make tissue paper flowers.  Christina and Kyndall were with the 1st graders teaching them the alphabet and some games. Just having a grand old time, lots laughs and lot of clapping going on.  Meanwhilie, Ben was in charge of about 30 or so 2nd graders, boy that was a load for him, but he did a wonderful job playing and shouting with them, getting chased around the field was fun to watch.  Charlene and Hannah, along with Richard were with the 7th grade girls, knitting , I believe they were making knitted caps.  After a rough start, the girls got to it like pros. I was hanging out with the 5th and 7th grade boys. I spoke to them about David and Goliath and how to be obedient to the Lord.  I really felt that the boys really enjoy our time together, it was a blessing for me as well.  Jordan was playing soccer with all the boys that came out for recess, he is working on a good tan, but first he has to worry about the sun burn on his neck and arms.  Chris and Tara went out to a village with Pastor Mumba to attend a conference.
The morning went really fast, "time flies when you are having fun".  We came and ate lunch at the learning center and then we went shopping for school supplies.  We have 4 teachers in our group, so going out to buy books and supplies was a priority.  We got back to the school and got to paint the chalk board black, change light bulbs and clean around the school.  There is alot of work to be done and we know that we will not finish, but we serve a great God and He will finish what He has started here in Lusaka.   To be here, playing and working with the children has been a blessing for all the team members, we really enjoy the time spent at the school.  We have paint and brushes ready for Thursday, it should really be fun painting the classrooms.  Have a good night and may God bless all.

Tuesday June 12, 2012
Hello, praying everyone is doing good this evening, we had a beautiful day today with the children in the school , thanks be to God.  I have invited Ben and Kyndall to write the blog for today and have them share their feelings.

Hello from Kyndall and Ben! Today was a blessing, as they have all been since we have been here in Zambia! After breakfast, we went to the school to pass out Crocs and Soles for Souls shoes that were donated to us. We organized it by class, starting with the first grade. Cindy had a great idea yesterday to use her nice camera to take individual shots of the students after they got their shoes (I guess her school yearbook background was showing through). We plan on printing them for the school and tomorrow, getting each classroom to do a group shot. The children love getting their pictures taken, so they REALLY enjoyed having individual portraits. It was amazing how our team came together to work so efficiently! We had 3-4 people as the "shoe fitters" and the children came at 4-5 at a time, we had about 3 people to hand the "shoe fitters" what shoes they needed for each child, and 1 person to regulate the rest of the class that was waiting to be fitted (many of the classes would sing songs about Jesus and his love while waiting). When they first were sat on the bench to be fitted, many were embarrassed by the looks of their shoes and feet. They would take their socks off and dirt would fall out, soles of shoes had holes all the way through, and many girls had flats that had been cut on the sides because they had been grown out of. When we asked if a particular shoe fit, they would always say "yes", because they were scared we would take them away. We learned to say, "If it doesn't fit, we will get you a better fitting pair." After they realized that the shoes were theirs to keep, smiles spread across their faces and they literally jumped, skipped and hopped for joy! Towards the end, we started to wonder if we would have enough shoes or if they would be fitting for the older children. We all kept saying, "God will provide" and of course, he did! We had enough for all the students, teachers, guards, and their children AND were able to give the remaining to the ZVG guys for their families and community. GOD IS GREAT. This whole process took until lunchtime. We came back to the Kalundu Study Center for a quick lunch, and returned to the academy ready to work on the school! Most of the guys dug holes outside to mark the property for footings, and the girls came into the schoolhouse and began cleaning. We swept (with a broom made of straw, with no handle and no dustpan), wiped down desks that appeared to never have been cleaned before, and reorganized the rooms to have more space. When we all met back together, ideas started coming together. We plan on getting all new chalkboards, painting the rooms, getting actual brooms, mops, rags and really freshening up the academy! We are all excited to see what the Lord has in store for us tomorrow. Have a blessed night and we will be in touch tomorrow!

Monday June 11th, 2012
Tonight I  have invited Rachel to write the the blog, and she is happy to share her views of a wonderful day.
Today was an amazing today, just like the past few days have been. We got to go to the school today and as soon as we got there, the kids ran up to us and were so excited we were finally here! We played out in the field with them, they sang some songs in their language, and then we taught them a few songs in English. They even sang "Jesus Loves Me" to us. The sweetest sound in the world. Makes me want to cry just talking about it. Here these kids don't have much but the clothes on their back and they are just ecstatic to have the opportunity to be at school. My group is in charge of 3rd and 4th grade, so we went to each of the classrooms, had the kids make name tags (with the help of Webster, our translator because their English is still limited), then they made bracelets. Each colored bead on the bracelet is a Christian meaning, such as red for Christ's sacrifice, so we had Webster translate the meanings and read scripture to them. We also got to give each student a red polo shirt. They wore those shirt proudly. Some of the students were even wearing polo shirts from last year, so it was good for them to get a new one. Tomorrow each student will get a pair of shoes. So excited to see the joy on their face when they receive them. These kids absolutely deserve the best, and this is the least that we can do. I'm looking forward to spending the rest of the week with the students and teaching them about Christ's love, as we love them.

Sunday June 10, 2012
Beautiful morning we woke up to, thanks to God.  We had a good breakfast and headed to service at the Church on the Rock, in Kalingalinga. A small congregation that rents space in a YMCA building.  The service and singing was amazing.  The Holy Spirit was among us.  Chris gave a powerful message and I was asked to speak for 5 minutes.  It was an emotional time for me and I just shared Jesus with them.  The praise team sang and danced to motivational and uplifting hymns.  After the first service we headed over to Highlands Baptist Church.  This service was also powerful and full of the Holy Spirit.  The Zambian people are very vocal and festive when it comes to worship.  We finished the morning with fellowship by meeting the whole congregation.   Then it was off to Pastor Mumba sister's house, Esther, for lunch.  The food was great.  The chickens were killed and plucked in front of us before they fried them. Talk about fresh food,  from coop to the fryer.... amazing.   God is great.  We were able to walk around the neighborhood and meet some people. Once we were finished with lunch, we went to the outdoor flea market.  Some of the ladies brought bags and nicknacks.  We were able to get back to the training center in time for dinner and devotions.  We finished the night preparing for Monday,  where we will go to the school for the first time.   Everyone is excited and looking forward to meeting the children.  We pray for all the people we met today and for all our families in the U.S.  May God bless all.  Good night and please check out the pictures.

Saturday June 9th, 2012
Hello, today our 2 full day in Lusaka and I don't know where to begin,, first of all I would like to give thanks to our Heavenly Father, for allowing us and for using us to share His love with the Zambian people.  We started out well rested and well fed.  Our first  task was to seperate  all the croc shoes we brought, along with the shirts and everything else that we will share with the children.  We were busy working when, we had to stop for,, ,,get this,,, TEA TIME,, since this was a British colony, they still practice British ways.  So we took our tea time and just relaxed.  Next came the guys from the group and we went out to exchange our dollars for the local currency, the kwatcha,, 5000 kwatchas for a dollar.  Then we  came back to eat lunch.  After lunch, we went out to the local village,, Kalingalinga, this is where the guys from the group grew up.  Pastor Mumba led the group in prayer walk in the village.   Walking around the neighborhood was an experience that I will treasure, all the children were outside playing around and all the adults were inside watching the Zambian national soccer team play a world cup qualifier against Ghana,, which Zambia won, then they were yelling and screaming in the streets.  We were able to give away a soccer ball to the children and they were all excited.. During the prayer walk, Ben and I were walking around with Sylvester, when we came upon a church that was made out of wooden planks,, Shady Oaks Baptist Church.  Inside were 6 ladies singing and praising the Lord, Sylvester knew them and they invited us inside.  Once inside the started to sing and dance, so we joined in,, that was a blessing.  Later on were we met up with Tara and Lillian at her house,, her brother sylvester brought the house for her and her family, it is under construction, but they still live in it.  We met up with the rest of the group and headed for diner.  After we had pizza for diner,,good by the way,, we
went and spent some time in devotional,,, sharing stories about what this day meant for us and how the Lord is working in us during this trip.  It was a fun time recounting our  experiences.   I can not tell you how much this trip means to all of us,, we are so grateful and full praises.  It has been so much fun and it is only our second day.  Tomorrow we will head to church service and then continue the task at hand. We pray that the Lord keep us through the night and that He wakes us up full of energy to do what He has called us to do.  Good night and enjoy the pictures.

Friday June 8,2012
Thank you God for getting us to Zambia safely.  After about 26 hrs of flying and waiting at the airports, we finally arrived in Lusaka, tired and happy the mission has begun.  Our flight to Dubai was long and fun,, Emirates airlines was great,, fed us a ton, lots of laughs and fellowshipping.  Our stay in Dubai airport consisted of walking from one terminal to another in a fast pace to make our flight to Zambia.  The airport is big and crowded, with lots of duty free shops. Charlene, was not feeling well, but was able to pull through and board the plane.  The last leg of the trip to  Lusaka, was alittle over six hours, and we were tired.  Again lots of food and lots of sleep. Arriving in Zambia felt great, we had a welcoming party, and everybody was joyful and full of thanks.  God is great.  Pastor Mumba, Joshua, his son and Slyvester and Webster, Lilian, Elijah, Angel the driver, made us feel really welcomed and they are so grateful that we are here.  We are staying at Kalundu Training Center,, a nun training school, it is a nice place and we all have our own rooms with hot showers and hot meals.  We took a drive into town, but we were all tired and hungry and agreed that rest was in need, so we returned, ate and some went to sleep.  We can not believe,  THAT WE ARE IN AFRICA.  We pray for a peaceful night sleep and that the Lord strengthen us to begin His work, for His purpose and that we all glorify His Name.

Good night and enjoy the pics
